10-7-19 What if they know what I'm Really Like_
Sitting in the front row biting my lip, defeating thoughts ran through my mind. โ€œWho am I to stand and speak before these people? Iโ€™m just a homeschooling mom with fifteen extra pounds (ok, maybe twenty) that I try to hide underneath my baggy shirt. I struggle and I donโ€™t have it all together. What if they find out what Iโ€™m really like?
Shame hides behind thoughts like that, telling us that if people really knew us, they would see that *gasp* we are just ordinary people.
ย
But God has a track record of taking the ordinary and using them to do something extraordinary, for His glory. King David knew who he wasโ€” a shepherd boy. The runt of the pack, his father did not even mention him as his son when the prophet Samuel asked to see all of his sons.

Oh, how I remember feeling that way as a child, wanting to avoid being seen, and yet being seen is what my heart so desperately craved.

ย
But instead, I was seen and ridiculed . . . when I was given the โ€œugly awardโ€ and a comb as my prize at a Girl Scouts sleepover . . . when I was a chubby batgirl running to get bats . . . when people threatened to beat me up . . . when I was the last one picked on a team.
ย
All of these hurts I carried forward without realizing it. Yet in this moment of feeling so conspicuous as I spoke to the precious women God had called me to speak to, I realized that nothing defined meโ€”not my past, my failures or my successes. And my weaknesses? They qualified me.

As Nathan the prophet spoke of Davidโ€™s present and future, David was overwhelmed by Godโ€™s favor and his humble position:
ย
โ€œThen King David went in and sat before the Lord and prayed, โ€˜Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And now, O God, in addition to everything else, you speak of giving your servant a lasting dynasty! You speak as though I were someone very great, O Lord God! We know our weaknesses and sometimes choose to be limited and defined by them. We know that God is the One Who deserves all the praise. And yet He shares praise, removes our shame and replaces it with honor:

David. The forgotten son. A shepherd boy. One of the least esteemed positions in that culture, made famous by God. But God knows what He is doing. This gift of favor and fame was not wasted. David sought to use any fame, any platform that God gave him for others to know God as the one true God. The Apostle Paul also knew his own shortcomings but was used mightily by God. A murderer of Godโ€™s people, he was not exactly a candidate to be Godโ€™s spokesperson:

We donโ€™t have to hide the โ€œugly partsโ€ of who we think we are or look to other fallen people to give us worth. Pride tells us to cover our weaknesses in shame. But it is in professing our weaknesses that we find the incredible freedom to just be ourselves. No more performing to try and measure up to what God has already attained. And self-consciousnessย disappears when we become conscious of who we are in Christ.
ย
Our God knows what we are really like and accepts us. There is no need to worry about someone finding out the โ€œreal dealโ€; that behind all the favor is just a weak vessel and a good God who deserves all of the praise. And when God honors me, I will gladly move aside to let Him receive all of the glory so others will know what He is really like.

The Ruling Baby King

colorfulparties-co

Inspirational Thought of the Day:

Instead of conquering us and ruling over us ruthlessly, God conquered our hearts and saved us.

Scripture of the Day:

Isaiah 9: 6-7

โ€œFor to us a child is born,ย to us a son is given,ย and the governmentย will be on his shoulders.ย And he will be calledย Wonderful Counselor,ย Mighty God,ย Everlastingย Father,ย Prince of Peace. ย 7ย Of the greatness of his governmentย and peaceย there will be no end. ย He will reignย on Davidโ€™s throne and over his kingdom,ย establishing and upholding itย with justiceย and righteousnessย from that time on and forever. ย The zealย of theย Lordย Almightyย will accomplish this.โ€

Donโ€™t be fooled โ€“ this King baby will reign. ย Despite the enemyโ€™s attempts to destroy Him, God’s plan stood firm. ย Despite a supposed defeat by ultimately being crucified, He rose from the dead and is coming again, only this time to reign. ย For spectators of a movie, this story is difficult to watch – the injustice of the wicked seemingly destroying the Holy One and His plan; the Almighty God coming in perceived weakness.

The Jewish people were looking for their King to come and rule โ€“ now โ€“ not in the future. But Godโ€™s ways are not our ways. In His wisdom, God came as a babeย so we could understand His salvation more than a God far away. ย Instead of conquering us and ruling over us ruthlessly, He conquered our hearts and saved us. ย He is our LORD, our Wonderful Counselor, to Whom we can come daily and moment by moment. ย His rule is righteous and just. ย His rule trumps every other ruler or government in this world.

In those moments when the wise men, shepherds and onlookers gazed upon God as a babe, how filled with wonder they must have been. ย How humbled to see their Creator coming in such a form. ย The most hardened heart was surely softened by such a gift. ย May we have this same awe in reflecting on our Jesus, coming as a babe to rule our hearts.

Lord, You are all-wise, all-knowing, Almighty God! ย Holy and humble, perfect One! ย I worship You and thank You for ruling in my heart and opening my eyes to see.

Do You Know Him?

god-does-not-make-us-choose-him-but-our-holy-god-bids-the-unholy-to-come-drawing-us-near-with-his-forgiveness-and-mercy

Inspirationalย Thought of the Day:

God does not make us choose Him, but our Holy God bids the unholy to come,ย drawing us near with His forgiveness and mercy.

Scripture of the Day:

Luke 4:34

โ€œHa! ย Leave us alone, Jesus the Nazarene! ย Have you come to destroy us? ย I know who you are โ€“ the Holy One of God.โ€

Such a small statement, and yet so profound. ย Even the demons knew who Jesus was and shuddered โ€“ but that knowledge did not equate to salvation for them. ย When confronted with the God of this universe this evil spirit did not want to be in His presence. ย Evil cannot be in the presence of God without being consumed or having atonement for sin. ย Fear and rejection of God was the only choice for this demon. ย How do we respond to seeing this gift of God? Are we fearful, do we think He wants to harm us, like the demons, or do we recognize the gift of His goodness, embrace His acceptance and come to know Him?

When my kids were little, they would try and sneak a look at the gifts before I wrapped them. ย As they got older, they might resort to peeling back the tape just enough to catch a glimpse, or to shaking the item to gauge what it was. ย They could not wait to see what gifts were given to them. ย It is that yearning that I want to keep fervent in my heart, when I think of seeing Jesus when He returns and when I meditate on what it must have been like to gaze at the King of kings as a baby. ย A precious gift, bundled in swaddling clothes was the redemption of all mankind โ€“ if we accepted the gift.

Now all these years later we know what a gift that first Christmas was. ย We can know that Jesus is God, but that is not the same as knowing Him. ย Sin brings fear of sure condemnation, but perfect love casts out all fear. ย When confronted with our sin by a Holy God, we have a choice โ€“ to bow down and worship Him, confessing our sins and receiving mercy, or to pridefully pretend we do not need His salvation.

Our Holy God does not make us know Him, but came to an unholy people as an infant to bid us to come and know Him, drawing us near with His forgiveness and mercy.

He established His law that we might see our need of Him, and He set the expectations for how we were to live for His glory.ย He wants us to know Him and how very much He loves us, for this is what we were made for.ย This Christmas, even though the story has been heard so many times, we can still with anticipation come to learn more of our living Savior and know Him more. ย He truly is the gift that keeps on giving, long after other gifts have faded.

Lord, help us to understand what You accomplished when You came to this earth. ย May we know You and not just know about you.

Truthful Tuesday: It Only Takes One

www-denisepass-com

Inspirational Thought of the Day:

The road of faithfulness is often a lonely road, but when it is paved with the love of God, our destination and hope are certain.

Scripture of the Day:

Ecclesiastes 9:18-10:1

โ€œWisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner can destroy much that is good.โ€ ย 10:1 โ€œOne dead fly makes the perfumerโ€™s ointment give off a rancid stench, so a little folly can outweigh much wisdom.โ€

It always astounds me that it can only take one dissenter to bring about chaos and destroy something good. ย A small percentage of a population can speak louder and change what the majority voted on. ย How is this able to happen? ย Passion. ย Activism. ย Devotion. ย Leadership . . . and pressing on despite it not being popular.

We admire when people accomplish great things when the odds are against them, but much more admirable are deeds done in righteousness than the wicked prevailing. ย A liberal agenda will not bring about the freedom its followers desire, but they still passionately fight for what they believe is right. ย Now more than ever the righteous must not let their voices be silenced. ย Our nation needs us more now than ever. ย It will not be popular to hold ground and try to turn the tide back, but it is possible. ย Your voice matters. ย Make it count for righteousness. ย It only takes one to begin to make a change.

Only One could pay for the sin debt of all mankind. ย He was not popular, but He knew His mission and completed it, despite much opposition. ย He changed this world forever โ€“ not just for a generation. ย This Christmas may we remember what Christ did for us and all mankind. ย May we all honor God with our lives and affect this society for His glory. ย It only takes one. ย Shine brightly in this generation โ€“ there is no other voice just like yours โ€“ it is needed now.

Christ showed us what living for One looks like.ย Only one road leads to life with our Savior and this narrow road is often fraught with trials on every side. The road of faithfulness is often a lonely road, but when it is paved with the love of God, our destination and hope are certain.

The song, โ€œThis Little Childโ€ by Scott Wesley Brown, written in the late 70โ€™s is so very fitting in our times. ย I end todayโ€™s post with lyrics contained within the second verse:

โ€œAnd over half the world is starvingย While our banner of decency is torn;
Debating over disarmament,ย Killing children before theyโ€™re born.
And fools who march to win the right to justify their sin.
Oh evโ€™ry nation that has fallenย Has fallen from within
Yet in the midst of this darknessย There is a hope a light that burns
This little child the King of kingsย Some day will return.โ€

Hear and see the lyrics to the complete song here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riSAYsLTQBs

Lord, help us to shine for You brighter and brighter. ย May we not cover or hide the light You have placed in us and boldly stand for truth and for Your glory. ย

Mundane Monday: The Calling of Christmas

the-same-god-who-intervened-in-time-and-came-in-the-flesh-is-calling-us-to-participate-in-the-christmas-story-too-2

Inspirational Thought of the Day:

The same God Who came in the flesh is calling us to participate in the Christmasย story, too.

Scriptures of the Day:

2 Peter 1:10

“Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble.”

2 Timothy 1:9-10

“He is the one who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not based on our works but on his own purpose and grace, granted to us in Christ Jesus before time began, 10ย but now made visible through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus. He has broken the power of death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel!”

We are doing a series at our church during this Christmas season on the calling of God on His people. The same God Who intervened in time and came in the flesh is calling us to participate in the Christmasย story, too. Will we be like those who gathered around to adore Him, like those who proclaimed His birth, or will we miss this opportunity altogether?

As a mom, I can get focused on all of the details of buying gifts for my 5 children and all of the aspects of the holiday celebration that I begin to lose perspective. As a wife, I am thinking about how to honor my husband in the purchases and bless him, too. As a worship leader, I am focused on provoking my church to worship God passionately during this Holy season. So many things to be done and so many hearts to affect with the Gospel. But we can’t allow the busyness of the season to hinder the vision God wants us to have for His work and His people – at Christmas and for all of time.

As we remember what God did when he demonstrated His radical love by leaving His throne in Heaven to allow mankind to provide care for Him, God stirs our hearts to respond to this amazing show of His affection for us. To make Himself that vulnerable, entrusting Himself to a wicked people – what lengths God went to in order to reach us with His love – how can we share this love with those around us?

For years my children and I would bake cookies for our entire neighborhood, then go and carol while we gave them out. Violins and guitars were sometimes in tow. We were cold, it was a lot of work, but the joy it brought others as well as ourselves was unmatched. The classical children’s choir I directed would go to nursing homes, raise gifts for local orphanages and sing to encourage others. Sweet times, indeed.

New seasons bring new opportunities and new ways to serve. In all our roles that we serve in on this earth, the greatest is as a child of God. How can we be His vessel today? What mission has He given to us?

What lengths can we go to this Christmas to reach people with the love of God? This is our calling. It might be uncomfortable. It might mean laying down our agendas or doing something different than our tradition (ah, the sacred cow). But when we are motivated by the love of God and give selflessly, we get just a glimpse of what God did for us and our joy is complete.

Finding Joy at Christmas

finding-joy-at-christmas

Inspirational Thought of the Day:

Sometimes we have to lose joy to find it.

Scripture of the Day:

Psalm 124:1

โ€œIf the Lord had not been on our sideโ€โ€”ย let Israel say this!โ€”ย 2ย if the Lord had not been on our side,ย when men attacked us,ย 3ย they would have swallowed us alive,ย when their anger raged against us.ย 4ย The water would have overpowered us;ย the current would have overwhelmed us. ย 5ย The raging waterย would have overwhelmed us.ย 6ย The Lord deserves praise,ย for he did not hand us over as prey to their teeth.ย 7ย We escaped with our lives, like a bird from a hunterโ€™s snare.ย The snare broke, and we escaped.ย 8ย Our deliverer is the Lord,ย the Creator of heaven and earth.โ€

Christmas can be a difficult time for many. ย The celebration of Christmas does not deliver what we hoped. ย Painful memories echo in our minds of family members who left us or harmed us. ย Thoughts of what should have been or could have been โ€“ regrets and longings can loom large and steal our joy. ย Maybe you do not even want to read this or dare to hope that there could actually be real joy at Christmas โ€“ keep reading.

The world offers many solutions for this emptiness of our soul. Entertainment, satisfying the flesh, avoiding the pain. ย Godโ€™s prescription is quite different โ€“ feel the pain in all of our humanity, but come to Him, Who can heal our souls. ย It is not a โ€œjust be happyโ€ or just โ€œchoose to be happyโ€ solution, but it is a choice to come to God and a real answer in the face of real pain.

One of my favorite books of the bible to read from when I am bummed is the book of Psalms. ย A songwriter myself, I cherish Davidโ€™s songs โ€“ a heart cry to His LORD. If anyone understands what it is to have emotional torment, it is David. ย He could have been diagnosed with many labels in his day โ€“ PTSD, panic and anxiety disorders, even depression. ย He said as much in many of the Psalms. ย But He was looking to One who he knew would resolve the battle within. ย David demonstrated again and again what looking to God for help would do โ€“ give hope and peace โ€“ even joy again.

That is what Christ does for us. ย He offers us hope through His trustworthy promises and deliverance. ย Christ understands suffering, too, and when we look to the Christ child this Christmas, we see a God Who is our Master, but Who also walks beside us. ย He chooses to call us friend โ€“ we are friends with a King! ย Now a King can grant any request โ€“ so it is with our God. ย Happiness at Christmas or any other time is not based on getting what we want, but on being content with what God has allowed. ย We can trust Him and He can bring real lasting joy more than a day ever could.

Pain is real โ€“ what do we do with it? ย The pain may not be absent and scars might last the rest of our days, but there is a healing balm in Jerusalem found in an infant Who changes our heart, understanding and perspective. ย The compassion gained through our pain is a beautiful gift we lay at the feet of our baby King, and He is pleased. ย May we lay down our idols as gifts much like Frankincense, gold and Myrrh, of what we wanted from life and Christmas and humbly accept the gift of life that God has given us. ย This is when joy enters our soul and we are relieved of the burden we have been holding onto. Give it all to Him and ask Him to help deliver you. ย He will do it and His grace is sufficient to all who call on His Name. ย It is going to be a Merry Christmas, after all, friend.

Thank You, LORD, for the amazing gift of your baby Son. ย What a treasure, what a delight! ย We lay our burdens at Your feet and trust You with all of what life brings our way. ย Amen.

30 Days of Cultivating Thankfulness: Day 30 โ€“ Faith

Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of 30 Days.png

Inspirational Thought of the Day:

The Christianย faith is formed in a living faith based on grace and forgiveness.

Scripture of the Day:

Hebrews 11:1

“Now faith is being confident of what we hope for, convinced about things we do not see.”

In concluding 30 days of gratitude, I realize there is vastly too much to be grateful for that could never be fully expressed. But today I am grateful for the gift of faith. How is it that I came to believe? That God would have mercy on me? It was God alone Who opened my eyes to see and understand His amazing salvation and God alone Who overcame my unbelief. And I am grateful beyond words.

This faith is a conviction deep within our souls despite not seeing fully what we hope for. Though it is tested, the confirmation in our souls is not swayed by the storms of this life. The storms of this life only serve to strengthen our faith as it is built on Christ.

When God first opened my eyes to understand His salvation, people around me said it was a crutch. I was mocked and persecuted and it only made me believe all the more. This lost world mocks faith yet has a faith, as well – in the creation rather than in the Creator.

This false faith formed in manmade, dead religion, is based on fleshly pursuits and good works that a fallen people could never fully achieve. The Christianย faith is formed in a living faith based on grace and forgiveness by a God Who knew we could never be good enough to please a Holy God.

Each day God’s word is a love letter to His people, inviting them to go deeper with Him. Come be a “fool” alongside me and find the greatest joy of your life. Michael Card says it well in “God’s Own Fool”ย – Christ humbled Himself to reach His people with the message of the cross – foolishness to those who are perishing, but to those who are being saved, it is the power of God.

Lord, thank You for the gift of faith and enabling us to know You – Our God.

30 Days of Cultivating Thankfulness: Day 29 โ€“ Health

copy-of-copy-of-copy-of-copy-of-copy-of-copy-of-copy-of-copy-of-copy-of-copy-of-copy-of-30-days-2

Inspirational Thought of the Day:

It is in weakness that I sense His grace and in struggles that I appreciate the times when I am not.

Scripture of the Day:

3 John 1:2
Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.”

On the 29th day of posting on Thankfulness, sickness hit several members of our household – BUT I still wanted to share how thankful I am for health, even if it is a day late.

There is a degree of conviction as I post about health and realize that I have not always been the best steward of the health that God has given. But even then, when we have not done our part, God amazingly designed our bodies to heal themselves.

Some illnesses or infirmities might be beyond our intervention, but God’s grace is sufficient for us. When I am sick I find I am ironicallyย more grateful for my health. It is in weakness that I sense His grace and in struggles that I appreciate the times when I am not.

The challenge is whether we will praise Him when we are healthy and unhealthy, at all times. The God Who designed our bodies and sustains life is the One Who also heals us, physically and spiritually.

Lord, thank You for the gift of health. Help us to honor the life You have give and to die to self when our flesh is craving what is harmful to our bodies. May You be glorified in our beings and all of our lives.

30 Days of Cultivating Thankfulness: Day 28 – Freedom from Sin

Inspirational Thought of the Day:

In our misguided pursuit of freedom, we are rebels destined to selfish living apart from God’s kind intervention.

Scripture of the Day:

2 Peter 1:10

“Therefore, brothers and sisters, make every effort to be sure of your calling and election. For by doing this you will never stumble into sin.”

2 Peter 2:19

“Although these false teachers promise such people freedom, they themselves are enslaved to immorality. For whatever a person succumbs to, to that he is enslaved.”

Galatians 5:1

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”

Freedom has been the theme of man’s desire from day one. We don’t like to be boxed in, whether it is to an endless routine, someone’s definition of us, or someone else’s rules. In our misguided pursuit of freedomย we are rebels destined to selfish living, apart from God’s kind intervention.

The inhabitantsย of this world longย to be free, but don’t know what we really need to be free from. Freedom from authority, freedom to do whatever we want is not truly freedom at all. But freedom to abstain from sin – this is true freedom – and our loving God provides freedom within His perfect boundaries.

When my children were small I would purposely set a coveted object in front of them and tell them not to touch it. Sounds cruel, huh? But it was actually a desire to teach them self-control and to learn that we need to be able to master our desire for things that are not good for us. I still need work on this, myself, when it comes to chocolate.

Sometimes we fall short and can begin to wonder if God forgives us still. This is one of the greatest aspects of our freedom in Christ. We are free to live Holy lives by His grace, but we are also freely forgiven when we fall. This is not to be mistaken as an abuse of grace, but a humbling reminder that our freedom is not something we could ever achieve on our own and it cost our Savior His blood. What motivation to reach for His grace and to abandon sin and its empty promises!

I am grateful that Christ showed us how to live for God and die to self and gave us the Holy Spirit to strengthen us when we are tempted. Christ set us completely free. Though we are in cases of clay, we can overcome and live victorious, freeย lives.

Lord, thank You for setting us free from the bondage of sin so we could live worthy lives for Your glory!

30 Days of Cultivating Thankfulness: Day 27 โ€“ Our Humble God

copy-of-copy-of-copy-of-copy-of-copy-of-copy-of-copy-of-copy-of-copy-of-copy-of-copy-of-30-days

Inspirational Thought of the Day:

While the kings of this earth choose to dominate their subjects, our God chose to humble Himself before the very people He made.

Scriptures of the Day:

Philippians 2:5-11

5 “You should have the same attitude toward one another that Christ Jesus had, 6ย who though he existed in the form of God did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped, 7ย but emptied himself by taking on the form of a slave, by looking like other men, and by sharing in human nature. 8ย He humbled himself, by becoming obedient to the point of death–even death on a cross! 9ย As a result God exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10ย so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow–in heaven and on earth and under the earth–11ย and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.”

2 Corinthians 8:9

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.”

Being humbled is embarrassing – I ought to know. I took a spill in a grocery store last week that left me flat on the floor, covered in oil, glass and chocolate. Almost death by chocolate. Ok, not really, but the whole chocolate chip display falling upon me was a wee bit humbling.

Humility is not something we desire, certainly not to be shamed in front of people. But our Almighty God, Creator and Ruler over all – is humble. He chooses the path of humility and shame to win our stubborn hearts. What an oxymoron to the world where power is often wrapped in pride and self-sufficiency. While the kings of this earth choose to dominate their subjects, our God chose to humble Himself before the very people He made.

When we disobeyed Him and were faithless, He relentlessly pursued us and came in humble flesh as a helpless babe, demonstrating how we should live on this earth and bearing all of our burdens.

One Who is LORD over all is typically thought of as commanding His followers. God gave commandments of His righteous decrees, fulfilled them when we couldn’t and offered Himself in our place.

This kind of behavior is foolish to men who view humility as aย weakness. But then that is how our God chooses to appear to us, in beautiful, perfect humility. He then chooses the weak among us, too, to demonstrate His power.

Satan thought He overcame when He crushed the Son of God, Who seemingly was too powerless in His surrender to death. But His surrender was our salvation and Christ overcame the grave and our souls in humility.

Lord, thank You for coming humbly to us when we deserved Your wrath. Thank You for revealing the wisdom of Your humility, which triumphs over man’s pride every time. Help us to be a humble people, recognizing that all that we have is Yours. Be glorified in Your people, O humble King of our hearts!
